A Short Introduction to Modern Chinese Literature:
On Baihua
(白话)Literature

On the 7th of July, 2017, an open lecture was delivered at the Center ofChinese Language and Culture at Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University.
The lecture introduced Modern Chinese Literature, its origins and the development for the past one hundred years. The following notions and movements were introduced and thoroughly discussed:
The notion of baihuawen(白话文), the vernacular literary language as opposed to the Classical literary language wenyanwen(文言文), is closely related to the New Literature Movement Xin WenxueYundong新文学运动)and the May Fourth Movement WusiYundong五四运动)in China at the beginning of the 20th century.
Two major figures in the history of Chines Modern Literature: Hu She(胡适) and Lu Xun (鲁迅), and their main works were introduced. The second part of the lecture mainly discussed Lu Xun, the “Father” of Chinese Modern Literature. How he left his studies as a medical student in Japan and embraced literature as a means to cure the spirituality and transform its nation towards a strong and “healthy” future.
Questions and answers session followed afterwards.
